I think I’m at the right stage in my life to promote a thing like this.
Of course, you did a TED Talk on the subject [in 2009], and it’s been watched millions of times, but, I think, in this current moment we’re in right now, the sabbatical is becoming almost more interesting as an idea because of the pace in which the world is going. Still, Sagmeister’s signature approach to design remains as exuberant as ever.
As soon as I thought about it, I had—which I don’t have very often—this little warm, nice feeling in my belly. I think that’s awful. And, of course, in the book, you can be a little bit wider and a little bit deeper than you can in a talk or in an exhibition. And then we’re gone. Your grandfather had to paint things to capture attention, to draw the eye in. There’s no hard-out thing. Which seemed at the time to be the less painful strategy than to also come up with a new idea. When I was a student, I was engaged in this stuff.
They really want to do this, and they want to do this as best as they can.
So he thought it was the stuff you do before you die. full-time, it was totally fine with me, because it basically meant I would have to open my own little thing. SB: So you’re taking chunks of time [during your sabbaticals] and determining, Okay, I’m going to use this time for X and this time for Y. SS: Yes, literally, there’s a daily, hourly plan, very much like in kindergarten. You were here for this first sabbatical. The photoshoot with Jessica was much later and, by that time, this was also not so new. I thought it might be fun to do. I’m a big planner, so I thought, I’ll do the opposite, I won’t have a plan. We definitely have much more in common with our Swiss neighbors than we would with, say, the Viennese. Digging in to how the sabbaticals created opportunities for incubating ideas that became two massive multi-year undertakings—one a project on happiness, the other on beauty—Sagmeister shares with Spencer Bailey how certain things have changed for his practice since that TED Talk a decade ago. Then I worked in Hong Kong.
I see my role as a teacher there not as one to motivate them—most students are pre-motivated. That seemed to work much better. I felt, that’s sort of strange, that you’d do these things at the end of your life.
For Wisdom, Zuckerman created portraits of, and conducted interviews with, more than 50 luminaries, including Nelson Mandela, Andrew Wyeth, Jane Goodall, and Madeleine Albright. You would get status from doing something well, and it wouldn’t really matter if that is doing a craft, like building a table, or if that is running a restaurant or a store, or being a graphic designer, for example, or being an artist. Stefan Sagmeister, the cheeky Austrian graphic designer, ... a psychologist who runs a very big lab on aesthetics in Vienna—his name is Dr. Helmut Leder —agreed to become our scientific expert, ... to little Stefan in Bregenz, Austria, in the 1960s.
One of those “things” is actually about time and, I think, a direct reference to why the sabbatical matters. . How did this third sabbatical open up this project to you without feeling like work? Did you always know that you were going to come back to New York?
It can be anything from your bookmark of images made by others (us), a trend, you - we call it Baubauhaus.
Even though it was a written thesis. SS: One of the down sides of doing this, of basically starting something that I didn’t really know how to go about—which was documentary filmmaking—was that [we mostly cut] the stuff that we did in Bali already, with very few exceptions.

2003 Jul;26(7 Pt 1):1494-7. We knew every day that we have from 10-7 to do this thing, which meant that we were hardworking during the day. I’m sure that there was an influence there. It required graphic material—posters, leaflets, things like that. And no weekend work.

Sagmeister talks about how, on his third and most recent sabbatical—especially during his time in Mexico City—he decided to start a project on beauty, which has recently been realized as a Phaidon book and traveling museum exhibition. I would say that the people in the eastern part of Switzerland, the western part of Austria, and the southern part of Germany are probably more alike than how they are in comparison to the rest of their countries.
